Sue Shires

 Team Manager/ Coordinator

Steve has been playing rugby since 1965 in high school at Coventry, England. He played in High School, College and at the Club level before moving to Syracuse in 1977. While in Syracuse, Steve was a member of the Syracuse Rogues Rugby Club. Two of Steve’s children (Nick and Susan) have been standouts in the New York State Rugby Conference. Steve began coaching at Syracuse in the spring of 2004 and has been a mainstay ever since. His overall knowledge and history of the sport has strengthened the club. Steve is a graduate of The University of Nottingham in England and is employed by The Hartford.

Sue’s love of rugby began when she was very young, as she states “not in the playing format unfortunately”. Growing up in England she watched her father play until he retired and continued to follow the sport as an fan.  She and her mother became addicted as avid fans as well so rugby was a big part of the family. She met Steve over 30 years ago and watched Steve play and impressed him with her knowledge of the game. When she came over to the States three years ago she quickly became a fan of the Syracuse Women’s club. Having her husband as one of the coaches, everyone knew that they needed to find a role for Sue as her energy and drive was not going unnoticed. Sue advises the staff in logistical issues and leads the clubs efforts for the Cure and plays a key role in providing an outlet of support beyond rugby.

Bob began playing rugby at 11 years old in North West England

and recently celebrated 50 years of participation. Having graduated from

an elite Physical Education program at Loughborough University he was

lured to Syracuse in 1970 as player/coach for the newly founded rugby

club. After a ten year return visit to the English Midlands, where he

coached rugby, soccer and basketball he came back to Syracuse in 1983,

initially as player/coach for local club sides, the Syracuse Rogues and

Chargers.

After returning to S.U. rugby in the late eighties the club enjoyed

consistent success in college competition. Having signed on

enthusiastically as Faculty Advisor the S.U. Women's Club, he was

delighted to watch their meteoric rise to elite status in the New York

State conference. "Having played when New York State Rugby consisted of

six teams, I am delighted with the growth and development in numbers and

quality of play. It is tremendous that during the Fall and Spring

seasons there are close to 100 teams enjoying the greatest team sport on

the planet."
