1) Do I need to have any prior experience playing to join the club?
Ans. No, most members have never played rugby before joining the club. Players are taught skills that prepare them to play in games.
2) When is rugby season?
Ans. There are two seasons for rugby, the spring season which is a developmental season. The spring season consists of practices and playing in tournaments determined by the Club. The club has participated in tournaments in Pittsburgh, New York City, Providence to name a few. The fall season is the club’s league season. The club belongs to the New York State Rugby Conference and is in the Premier (D-I) Division. The club plays each club from the Premier Division to determine playoff position. The other Premier Clubs in New York State include; SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Brockport ,University at Buffalo, Cornell University and Ithaca College. Unlike the Spring, the fall season is dictated by the Conference, the two top teams are invited to the Northeast Rugby Union Playoffs and compete to qualify for the National Tournament.
3) What equipment will I need?
Ans. To play, the only equipment that is not provided is cleats and mouth guards. Cleats can be plastic or metal and cannot have a toe cleat. Players can buy cleats for as low as $50. Additionally the club sells rugby socks for $5 a pair.
4) Is there Dues?
Ans. Due to limited resources provided from the University, the Club does have dues that is required to play. $40 semester provides transportation to games, team equipment, tournament entry fees, and additional expenses required to operate the club. |
